Headache after or during the sauna? After relaxing once that irritating headache suddenly comes on. Seems contradictory doesn't it? How can you get a headache by relaxing? This may be the first question that comes to your mind, but headaches after sauna can have many other reasons. A sauna is a small wooden room where people bathe in heat. It encourages sweating, which is therapeutic. Saunas are perfectly safe and healthy, so there is no need to worry. However, pregnant women should take some precautions. In this article you will find more information about sauna and pregnancy. Why do you have a headache after the sauna? You come home from the sauna and feel completely zen. With that wonderful feeling, you are still enjoying your sauna visit. But suddenly your whole evening is ruined by a headache. The sweetest thing you want to do now is to take an aspirin and crawl into your bed, you bald. Now how can you get a headache after the sauna? Sauna headaches have a very logical reason and may have to do with your sauna routine. Dehydration - main cause of headaches after sauna Usually, dehydration is the main culprit behind the discomfort you feel after a sauna bath. It is the loss of fluid to the point where the body does not have much left for normal organ functions. In fact, if you feel thirsty, you are already slightly dehydrated [2]. Why does dehydration cause headaches? Sauna causes excessive sweating, which can quickly lead to dehydration. This causes the brain and veins to contract, literally shrinking your brain, causing it to move away from the skull. This puts pressure on your nerves, resulting in pain. Some people are sensitive and may experience headaches as a result of mild dehydration. Drinking a glass or two of water quickly rehydrates your brain, and relieves pain. Dehydration can even become life-threatening if accompanied by the following symptoms: Lethargy and confusion Fainting Dark-colored urine or no pee Rapid heart rate Extremely dry skin High blood pressure and headache If you suffer from headaches after the sauna, it is often also due to high blood pressure if you have not cooled down sufficiently after the sauna. If you take a cold shower after a sauna session, your blood pressure rises; it must go back down. Don't wish for a headache after the sauna? Then it is important that you make your body cool down properly. Otherwise, blood pressure will not drop enough and you may suffer from headaches. Stress and the sauna Do you have a busy life and stress? Then headaches after a sauna visit can be a cause of that mandatory rest. You relax in the sauna and you leave the sauna feeling zen. You are completely relaxed but that can actually cause headaches, you have a hangover from too much stress. Do you suffer from tension headaches? Then the sauna can help you get rid of them. In the sauna you are obliged to rest, you empty your mind. This is good for reducing or preventing tension headaches. You forget your worries and feel zen. Regularly visiting a public or private sauna when you are stressed can reduce your tension headaches! Migraine and sauna Do you often suffer from migraines and still want to go to the sauna, but you don't know if this is wise? Migraine is the best known chronic headache. Migraine and sauna are not always seen as a great combination. If you suffer from migraines, going to the sauna can trigger an attack. Still, sauna can be a nice experience in people who are prone to migraines. With migraines and sauna, it is important to follow the rules. Rest for at least half an hour between sauna sessions and before getting dressed again. Cooling is also very important if you have migraines and go to the sauna. So sauna and migraine do go together as long as you follow the sauna rules. Good cooling prevents headaches after the sauna If you go to the sauna and do not wish to have a headache afterwards, it is important that you stick to the cooling process. Headache after sauna and still cooled down? Then you probably didn't cool down enough. Sauna headaches can be prevented if you undergo the following steps: First, shower the sweat off your body. It is important to take a cold shower but first let your feet and then your legs get used to the cold before cooling the rest of your body. The plunge pool, the terror of every sauna visitor, may not be much fun, but it certainly helps to avoid headaches after the sauna. When you go into the plunge pool, it is important that you also go head-to-toe. If you don't cool your head enough, it can cause headaches from the excessive heat.ewerken. Sauna headache due to different heat Headaches after the sauna can also be caused by the type of sauna you were last in. Did you know that there are two types of heat? In the Finnish sauna you feel the so-called dry heat, so you will sweat well. Are you in the hammam? Then you will find that you do not sweat, because of the moist heat here. These two types of heat may be the reason for your headaches. Start with the hammam and end with the Finnish sauna. In the hammam, your body cannot get rid of the excessive heat properly and this leads to higher blood pressure. Because of that higher blood pressure, you may suffer from a headache afterwards. Again, however, always cool down well between sauna sessions. When in doubt, always consult your doctor first. If you regularly suffer from severe headaches, it is advisable to have this thoroughly examined. Akwa Wellness

Scientists are still uncovering all of the merits of whole grains. Basically, the point is that whole-grain foods retain the bran and germ as well as the endosperm or flour portion of the original grain. That makes whole grains foods better sources of: B vitamins vitamin E selenium zinc copper magnesium fiber and other nutrients that are lost when the grain is refined for white rice or white flour. Even though some vitamins and minerals are added back to refined grains after they go through the milling process, they still aren't as good as the original. The benefits of eating more whole grains are becoming clearer as scientists continue to examine the evidence. In fact, researchers analyzed several studies totaling 149,000 participants on the relation between whole grains and cardiovascular disease for the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases. The findings showed a consistent association between eating at least 2.5 servings of whole grains a day and good heart health. The health benefits, researchers found, include a lower incidence of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure and inflammation. In addition, the American Institute of Cancer Research suggests that diets rich in whole grains can reduce the incidence of certain types of cancer. Not only do whole grains contain fiber, vitamins, minerals and natural phytochemicals (plant compounds not designated as "nutrients" that can protect cells from damage that could lead to cancer), but eating more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans could reduce the amount of red meat and processed meat in our diet - foods linked to increased cancer risk. To incorporate more whole-grain foods in your diet, choose:

Christiaan Janssens CRO Akwa Wellness Prevention is the Key to Heart Health Heart disease is still an important killer of men and women. But by heeding the following advice you can dramatically reduce your risk of heart disease. Avoid Tobacco If you smoke . . . quit! Smoking is the leading preventable cause of illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and emphysema. Tobacco smoke contains chemicals that damage your heart and blood vessels, and nicotine overworks your heart by constricting blood vessels and increasing your heart rate and blood pressure. The good news: when you quit smoking, your risk of heart, lung and blood vessel disease drops dramatically in just one year. Exercise Exercise can be fun, and it's good for you. Regular exercise can cut your risk of fatal heart disease by nearly a quarter. Exercise helps strengthen your heart so it can pump more blood and oxygen into your body with less effort. Plus, it builds endurance, controls blood pressure and weight gain and can help reduce cholesterol and your risk of developing diabetes. Eat Heart-Healthily Healthy eating doesn't necessarily mean cutting back or going on a diet. It means eating a lot of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products, avoiding processed and fried foods and limiting your intake of certain fats. Saturated fat and trans fat increase your risk of coronary artery disease by raising blood cholesterol levels. Saturated fat is found in the food we love to eat such as beef, butter, cheese and milk. Although heart-healthy eating doesn't mean cutting out alcohol entirely, don't have more than two drinks a day. Watch Your Weight We tend to gain weight with age, and weight gain can lead to conditions that increase the chance of heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. A good way to know if your weight is considered "healthy" is to calculate your BMI (body mass index). BMI numbers 25 and higher are associated with higher blood fats, higher blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. However, your BMI is an imperfect guide. Very fit and muscular men can have high BMIs without the health risks, because muscle weighs more than fat. In general, men are considered overweight if their waist is greater than 1 meter, and women over 90 centimeters. Go to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute website for an instant BMI calculation. Visit Your Doctor One of the most important things you can do is schedule an annual checkup with your doctor, who can pinpoint major risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as smoking, elevated cholesterol or blood pressure, excess weight and diabetes. And finally, Educate Yourself Learn as much as you can about healthy living. Christiaan Janssens Akwa Wellness Herbal supplements are a booming business. Current figures show Americans spend as much as $13 billion annually on these products. Can herbal remedies reduce your cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart attack? What distinguishes herbal remedies and dietary supplements, like edhedra diet pills, bsn supplements, and prohormone supplements from conventional pharmaceuticals are the rigorous scientific studies and clinical trials that prescription drugs must undergo before being approved for general use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA’s ability to regulate control of herbal and discount diet pills has been repeatedly reduced and, as a result, these products can be sold in formulations like drugs and potencies without any proof of effectiveness and safety. Some people turn to herbal supplements because they are wary of so-called hazardous side effects. But these side effects are not that common. Only a fraction people have side effects that this or that medicine is claimed to have. Another reason why people turn to herbal supplements is that they subscribe to the belief that, because these supplements are natural, they are safe. This is not always the case. There have been instances when natural substances have proved hazardous, such as diet supplement known as fen-phen. This combination of fenfluramine and phentermine was withdrawn from the market because of possible links to heart disease. Are all herbal supplements have potential danger to your health? Definitely not. On the contrary, some of them may benefit you and your medical condition. But we strongly believe that any of herbal remedies and herbal supplements that you want to consider, should not be taken without consultation with your doctor. Christiaan Janssens Akwa Wellness Belgium There is a big difference between washing your face and taking good care of your skin. Beautiful skin begins from the inside – lifestyle choices such as lack of sleep, inadequate personal hygiene, tobacco smoking, and alcohol consumption lend to mounting toxins inside the pores and are examples of factors that lead to a tired complexion. Ideally, you drink eight glasses of water a day, take a multi-vitamin, eat healthily, drink a cup of green tea and go to bed early to obtain eight hours of restful sleep. You wake up feeling and looking tremendous! Well, for most of us, that is not really how life plays out - and that is OK! Skin care therapists, great products, and natural ingredients are always available to help you make up for damage that occurs to your complexion while going about your daily life. Facials Having a facial can be embarrassing because your skin is completely exposed (along with your bad habits.) Aestheticians are trained professionals who have seen skin in all stages of damage. They are not there to judge you - they are there to help you leave the spa looking healthier and more radiant. This is a testament to their expertise and that is the ultimate goal. Internal therapy Water: We are so lucky to have healthy, clean water to drink – so drink it! This is the best thing you can do to cleanse your skin internally. Take a multi-vitamin… and make sure it is water soluble. Surprisingly, most vitamins are not approved by the FDA. This does not make them dangerous, but they should be researched. Make certain that the vitamin you choose is water soluble, otherwise the nutrients are not reaching your bloodstream, thus acting ineffectively. The nutrients found in vitamins act as strengtheners to fend off environmental toxins while building strength in your tissues and regenerating internal moisturizers. Green tea drinkers have higher elasticity and more regenerators in their facial complexion – this comes from light traces of caffeine and antioxidants. If you don’t like it, try to force it in at least once a week. Products Find the right products for your skin. People tend to recommend products based on their personal experience, but all skin types vary and react differently to certain ingredients. Aestheticians and dermatologists typically work with one product line which they were trained to use, so of course, they will probably advocate that product line. If you ask questions however, they will likely be honest about your needs and help you find a product that will work for your skin type. Don’t be afraid to ask what product you can purchase at the drug store to fit into your budget. Pascale Loveniers Akwa Beauty & Wellness Think of the skin as a wrapper holding your body together, everything inside constantly pushing against it. So you want to be as healthy internally as possible… And while you are at it, reap the benefits of the lovely scent and skin softening agents that the papaya provides. The meaty fruit of the papaya helps skin fight against premature aging. One of the main culprits of premature aging is poor digestion. This island fruit carries an enzyme called papain which aides in digestion, (unripe papayas carry more than ripened.) Poor digestion causes nutrients that are beneficial to the health of your skin disappear. Other benefits of the papaya include: - Rich in carotene, vitamin C, vitamin A, arginine, and carpaine, the papaya carries enzymes that boost male fertility and decrease blood clotting. - Papaya juice reduces infections of the colon. - Studies show that ripe papayas prevent cancer in organs and glands with epithelial. - Prevents morning sickness and motion sickness - Polishes and sloughs dead skin cells - Gently softens skin without oily residue - Relieves Toothache - Prevents Arthritis Pascale Loveniers Health & Wellness Blog In search for a treatment to create fuller lashes? Sorry everyone, it is predetermined by your genetic makeup and there really is not anything you can do to change the way they are… but you can change the way that they look! Some women are blessed with long, beautiful and thick eyelashes. Some are stuck with short, sparse and brittle lashes. Fortunately, every year many new products are introduced promising volume and length enhancing properties for our lashes. 1. Curl lashes first! If you curl lashes after applying primer or mascara, they will stick to the curler and fall out. Not such a big deal if you have a lot to lose, but if your lashes are very sparse, even the most subtle loss of lashes is noticeable. 2. Use a primer or clear mascara as a base. Let dry completely before applying mascara. 3. Instead of a lash separator, let mascara dry slightly on brush before applying it to your lashes. This will separate them without using an abrasive tool made of hard plastic. Apply 2-3 coats. Pascale Loveniers Akwa Beauty & Wellness P.S. No beauty treatment is worth jeopardizing your eyesight - so leave it to the makeup masters to develop products and share the steps to more noticeable lashes. Makeup can be an overwhelming part of the beauty regimen. Suddenly, certain “rules” have interfered with tricks that may work wonders for an individual. Makeup is meant to enhance facial features and apparel – it is also a fun form of self expression... so break the rules if you want to! I don’t suggest wearing blue lipstick, but if you want to wear a dark eye in the day, do it… and do it right! We are so lucky to be of a gender that can change her entire look with a couple of tools. So have fun with your makeup, and try to keep some of the following secrets in mind.... Choosing appropriate eyeshadow color: Satin textured shadows are great for day-wear Shimmery or iridescent shadows create a bold statement, i.e. wear for a night out! Pastel colors work well with cool skin tones Earth colors work well with warm skin tones Dark eye shadow compliments large eyes Light eye shadow allows your natural eye color to be the main focus. For a more dramatic eye: Eye pencils create smokier looks than liquid liner. Curl lashes ¾ the way towards lids, twice before applying mascara, once after first coat dries. When using pigment (shadow) that is dark or loose, place a paper towel under your bottom lash line to catch the stray color and minimize raccoon eyes. Dab a tiny bit of light, iridescent shadow to the inside of your upper lid (by nose) and lightly above the outer part of your eyebrow. This makes eyes appear lively! The key here is to do so subtly! Lining the entire top lid has a maximizing effect, lining half minimizes – make your choice based upon preference. Clear mascara works wonders for keeping brows in place! Pascale Loveniers Akwa Beauty & Wellness Choosing flattering eye-makeup can be difficult – you must consider hair color, personal style, skin tone, and of course – your eye color. Contrary to fashionable belief, you may not want to match your eye shadow to your exact eye color; instead opting for a complimentary color. This tip could easily become a novella, so stay tuned for more makeup advice. However for now, let's keep it simple: Green Eyes Day: apricot, plum, light brown, khaki Night: gold, purple, fuchsia, deep brown Brown Eyes Day: beige, bronze, light brown, army green Night: gold, bold blue, yellow, emerald green, purple Blue Eyes Day: taupe, light pink, light brown, violet, gray Night: tangerine, silver, turquoise Pascale Loveniers Akwa Beauty & Wellness We spend less time as we get older taking advantage of some of the most precious alone time available to us: the daily shower (or bath, whatever suits you.) As we get older, our responsibilities thicken, we try to cram more efficiency into every day… fact of the matter is that not only have we become completely accustomed to minimizing the amount of time it takes to complete a task, we are still trying to better ourselves – increase activity + sleep less = winner!
While pondering this idea of shortcuts, it occurred to me that I am this person. If I am struggling to find time enough to run errands, then I am almost certainly not creating enough time for myself. Done are the days of my early twenties in Los Angeles when I managed a spa, spent countless hours perusing the latest beauty trends and even more hours trying them out… yes, I have become like many others past the age of 25, scrambling to get out the door, cutting beauty corners, you know the deal. So in an effort to relax after a busy couple of years, I decided today that my shower would become a spa-like experience after several months on hiatus from taking the time to pamper smyself. Here's how it went down: I applied a fruit-infused sea kelp mask, (which I rinsed ten minutes later in the shower.) I exfoliated my body with sugar scrub, massaging in circular motions like Self Magazine tells you too… rinsed, didn’t repeat. I consulted my most lavish, exotic, paraben free body wash, mixing in a variety of bath oils that would penetrate my recently exfoliated skin. Added organic neem oil* to my body lotion – the trick with neem oil is to mask the scent (not so enchanting) by mixing it with a bold, lovely one. I toned my face, applied serum, face cream, and eye gel (because the eyes are a tad puffy today after a long Superbowl/blizzard-filled weekend.) I am looking at this list of steps thinking that it is almost silly to consult so many products in pursuit of a mere recharge… yet here I sit, steps from my home-spa feeling completely cleansed, more delicate and 100% more relaxed than I had felt just an hour before. Instead of ruing a lapse in my life of fine-tuned organization, I acknowledge that my “I need a spa day” meltdown did purge one hour from my day, but it noticeably increased my productivity.
